Acupuncture is growing in popularity around the world. It is a technique inwhich very thin needles are pushed into specific point on the body. Experts say each poit has access to a a special energy flow. The needles can stop the flow of energy that causes pain. They also say acupuncture is painless.
Many people think twice about doctors sticking needles in them. However, anew study into this ancient Chinese therapy shows it is better than usualhospital treatments at relieving backpain. This maybe good news for millions of people who suffer frombackpain. Up to 85 percent of us will experience apainful back at some time in our life.
The WHO(World Health Organization)recommends acupuncture for over 20 different medical problems. A research team studied 638 patients with lower back pain. After eight weeks, up to 69 percent of the patients having acupuncture said their back pain improved. This compares to just 39 percent for the patients who reveived conventional care. The study showed that acupuncture worked. Western doctors do not understand how or why these lines of energy work, but they are beginning to take it seriously.
